Laura Secord Holds First Annual Walk/Run for Miracles

Posted: May 19, 2009       By: Jessica Davies

On Friday, May 8, students and staff of Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines held their 1st Annual Walk/Run for Miracles in support of the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation and managed to raise almost $6,000.

To participate in the Walk/Run, students and staff collected pledges and everyone who obtained pledges totalling $10.00 or more was invited to participate and enjoy a free barbeque lunch following completion of the 5K route.  Prizes were awarded to fastest runners, the top home room, and to some of our top individual fundraisers.

In preparation for the event, a small group of students toured the Children’s Centre in early April.  On Monday, April 27, these students joined Vince De Luca, Director of the Foundation, in making a presentation about the Centre to a full student body assembly.  One of the students gave an inspirational talk on his personal experience of how the Centre therapists assisted him in overcoming a disability.

St. Catharines MPP and Provincial Transportation Minister Jim Bradley and Mayor Brian McMullen attended and spoke at the Opening Ceremonies.  Local DJ John Dick provided the music and sound system.
